People who live in IS-controlled areas describe themselves as prisoners languishing inside a prison governed by IS security and guarded by IS knifes which have become more terrifying than the roar of the cavernous aircraft and barrel bombs.
While the true prisoners inside the prisons of IS wishing to see the large prison, which has become a dream for some of them, it probably holds between its walls more merciful death or living free from torture surpassed that in Bastille prison.
Abu Alnour, a former prisoner who was accused of selling weapons to fighters of FSA, was set free after paying 50 thousand dollars. he managed to escape to north Syria away from IS authority and met with “Sound and Picture” to talk about what he has witness inside of IS prisons.
Abu Alnour has a difficulty in sitting, leaning on his right hand because of an injury he got in IS’ prisons that caused him a permanent disability, he said: “my suffering began when IS took control of Mayadeen city in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. IS then started to arrest people, and I was one of the detainees because of my arms trade and selling weapons to FSA before IS control. I remember the last words I heard before I entering the prison, it was in Iraqi accent of an IS member who said to me while pushing me inside (you now entered the door of hell)”.
Abu Alnour also said: “I do not want to talk about the beating, the electric shocks and the daily insults, I would rather talk about the young Abdullah who went crazy inside the prison, he was accused of being a former FSA fighter, and he had the biggest share of torture within our group, which consisted of 13 prisoners in a less than eight-square-meter sized cell. One night we woke up on his voice screaming, we later knew that some of IS members entered stealthily into the room and put severed head next to him and woke him up and when he saw the head he lost his mind. “
Abu Alnour stopped speaking for ten minutes and tried to hide his tears and said: “Seeing the young man Abdullah bad condition in the next day was the most severe torture I ever received there, I dream every day about a human head placed next to me. There are lots of things that you may think happen only in horror movies but it is happening for real in IS prisons”.
“Sound and Picture” reporter in Deir Ezzor started an investigation on IS prisons, and managed to find one of the former IS prisoners, and with great difficulty persuaded him to give his testimony, on the condition of keeping his identity unknown for his safety so he took the name “Rakan” as a fake name.
Rakan said: “I do not know where they got that much of hatred from to come up with these kinds of torture methods. They used to bring human legs and arms into the prison to hang them inside our cells for a week or more not caring about the bad smell we suffered from. Once, they brought a human head and forced us to play the football with it, and when we refused they started playing with it and they laughed and said that (next time this head going to be one of ours).”
Rakan also said: “All of the prisoners were Under sentence of death, that is what we have been told by IS members. Every day one of us was taken randomly and we never heard about him again, after my release I heard that some of them were executed while others probably were transferred to another prison. “
IS prison conditions are similar in all the region, Among the prominent ones was the Islamic court prison in the city of Menbej in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, where detainees were held in small cells that has a very small hole-in-the-wall which is considered the only ventilation for prisoners, about 55 prisoners in a cell of 30 square meters, and nearly 210 prisoners in 150 square meters cell. As in respect of solitary cells, each cell was a one meter only”.
Rakan confirmed the presence of all torturing methods such as electric shocks, burnings, beating in all forms, also psychological torturing techniques which outweigh the physical torture, they always has been working on destroying humanity in people through forcing them to insult dead bodies or by forcing us to beat each other with severed arms that were brought in by IS members”.
A lot of horrible deeds are being revealed day after day to show the bad situation in IS controlled areas. Treating amputated limbs in the visual releases of IS hides a lot of crimes against humanity and warns us of the danger of transferring violence to the whole society.
