Deir Ezzor – Sound and Picture

After a lull in the fighting fronts in for several months between the regime forces and IS in Deir Ezzor province east of Syria, IS renewed the battles in a search of a new victory after a series of defeats in the Raqqa northern countryside and Hasaka northeast Syria.

The military airport is the target

In September 9th, IS performed an attack on Deir Ezzor Airport using heavy and medium weapons, where IS fighters were able to took over a number of points in the airport surroundings after blowing two car bombs in regime forces locations there.

“Sound and Picture” reporter said: “IS fighters took control of the white building, which is one of the most important strategic points within the airport perimeter, along with the rocket battalion, and that was after the bombing of two car bombs by Syrian suicide bombers. One car targeted the rocket battalion while the other targeted the white building Southeast the airport”.

Fighting has caused a large number of casualties on both sides, nearly 50 of regime forces has died, according to medical sources from within the regime military hospital, while IS lost more than 40 fighters, and dozens of injured who were transferred all to the city of Almayadeen East of Deir Ezzor.

IS has been able to capture a number of regime fighters and seize some arms and ammunition after the defection of some of regime fighters leaving their equipment.

Toxic gases to deter IS

After the great progress of IS in the airport by breaking the first line of regime forces defenses. The regime targeted IS new positions and other points in the surroundings, with Toxic gases, which forced IS to stop its progress inside the airport.

A medical source in Mayadeen city “refused to reveal his identity for security reasons”, reported that, more than 20 members of IS were poisoned due to inhaling toxic gases and were taken to hospitals in the city.

The source explained that the gas that was used has not been recognized yet due to the lack of equipment, and has not been determined if it is chlorine gas or mustard or other, but it is certain that these cases “are suffering from symptoms of poisoning as a result of inhaling toxic gas.

The regime using of toxic gases in fighting IS was not the first of its kind,. Months ago, IS launched an attack on regime-controlled areas within the city of Deir Ezzor and the military airport and achieved a significant progress. However, regime forces managed, days after, to restore of all the points by bombing the airport perimeter with chlorine gas.

Continuous back-up for both sides

Five days have passed since the start of fighting, where both of parties still bringing more back-up, such as manpower and weapons.

IS, according to our reporters, is getting reinforcements from the eastern and northern countryside for the airport perimeter on a daily basis. As a number of tanks and armored vehicles has arrived. IS also has strengthened its forces in the village of Ayyash west of Deir Ezzor and the village of Geneina, which both were declared as a military zone by IS.

The regime has sent for back-up of four tanks and a number of SUV, from Talae’e camp towards the airport and Taim oilfield. It has also enhanced security in Brigade 137  and Ayyash warehouses west of Deir Ezzor to avoid any surprising attacks by IS, and in an attempt to take back its position.

Battles are still ongoing, and the crowds are flocking on a daily basis towards both sides, who declared that the battles will be a reason in dissolution one of them. People of Deir Ezzor  are divided, some are optimistic while others are frustrated, especially that the previous battles did not achieve any significant results. While there is another group of people who don’t not care about both sides and wish to get rid of them both.
