Almosul – Sound and Picture
During the past 3 days, the international coalition forces have been intensively targeting Musel city in Iraq. Unlike the previous attacks, which aimed at IS’s headquarters, camps and stores in areas distant from the civilians, the new attacks is taking an unprecedented manner in terms of targets, the intensity of shelling and also timing.
Two days ago, the coalition forces targeted Almajmua althaqafia” the cultural area” which is full of shops and considered one of the busiest areas in the city where people always gather. Despite the fact that the strikes had targeted IS headquarters there, which IS intentionally plants them in a populated areas in order to use civilians as human shields, the coalition forces carried out the attack in the peak time, causing a large number of civilian casualties and serious injuries to many people, as well as destroying many shops and residential buildings.
This unprecedented attacks has created panic among people and IS fighters as well, as they hurried to replace their headquarters to another safer areas, yet inside another residential neighborhoods.
Among the places which was attacked by the coalition forces is IS’s Sharia court near the gate of Musel university, in addition to Hosba office near gasoline station in the same area. The strikes has caused a lot of damages to the university of Musel as most of its buildings was destroyed, including the basic education, engineering faculty, the printing house and the university presidency buildings.
Activists from Musel were surprised after such operations that targeted the city infrastructure and civilians, and they wondered about its causes, especially that the region is almost empty of IS fighters. Some activist went to believe that such operations aimed at “a systematic destruction in order to achieve some agenda to destroy the entire city “.
On the other hand, “Sound and Picture” reporter in Musel, pointed out some of the people’s views, which said that, during the recent appeals launched by the operations command to take caution, IS had taken into account the warnings. As IS fighters have moved huge quantities of ammunition and placed them inside deserted residential buildings. They have also evacuated a large number of IS families living in the city to become the new headquarters for IS and installed surveillance cameras in the streets of the neighborhoods where they are located.
All of this have helped IS to permeate in civilian areas, provoking many residents to flee in fear of using them as human shields, at a time it became clear that the coalition forces are indifferent to their presence during their strikes and under the growing feeling that the storm had already begun.
